SEC Slashes Wells Fargo Whistleblower Award to $55 Million
Wells Fargo’s fake-accounts scandal came to light in 2016, after bank employees under pressure to meet sales targets opened large numbers of accounts without customers’ consent. Former executive Michael Bacon helped expose the misconduct and applied for an award under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s whistleblower program. The case also raises questions about how regulators assess a tipster’s contribution to an enforcement outcome.
As of July 20, 2026, the SEC had cut about $125 million from the $180 million award Bacon had initially stood to receive, reducing the final amount to roughly $55 million. Bacon is appealing the SEC’s decision, challenging the scale of the reduction. The dispute centers on how much his information contributed to the enforcement outcome in the Wells Fargo case.
