Perplexity Develops Teammate AI Coding Agent

AI search company Perplexity is expanding into the “vibe coding” market by internally developing Teammate, an AI coding agent. Unlike assistants that provide real-time code completion, the product is designed for long-running engineering and cybersecurity tasks. Its model-agnostic architecture is intended to reduce reliance on any single large language model provider.

As of July 2026, Perplexity had not announced a formal launch date, pricing or a list of supported models for Teammate. The tool is already under development internally and can switch underlying models based on the task. Chief Technology Officer Denis Yarats predicted that engineers could stop reading code directly by the end of 2026, leaving AI agents to handle most of the work.
