Ericsson Backs AI RAN for Smarter, Greener Mobile Networks
Radio access networks, or RAN, connect mobile devices to carrier infrastructure and play a central role in network capacity, latency and power consumption. Ericsson expects artificial intelligence to become a native part of that infrastructure, allowing networks to respond to traffic conditions and user demand in real time instead of relying mainly on preset rules. The approach is also intended to lay the groundwork for deeper integration between AI and mobile networks in the 6G era.
Ericsson recently said AI RAN is poised to become a key feature of next-generation mobile networks. Embedding AI capabilities in base stations and related infrastructure could improve the use of radio and energy resources through continuous, dynamic optimization. The technology is expected to support low-latency and differentiated connectivity services, enabling operators to tune performance for specific applications and customer needs while moving toward smarter, user-centric and more energy-efficient network operations.
