Trump Unveils Self-Supplied Power Plan for AI Data Centers; Bitcoin Rebounds
The expansion of generative AI has driven a surge in data-center electricity demand. Harvard Kennedy School estimates that data centers could account for as much as 12% of U.S. electricity consumption by 2028, while the U.S. Energy Information Administration said residential electricity prices rose 6% in 2025. Pressure on household power bills and the aging grid has made the question of whether technology companies should bear the cost of new power generation a major issue ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump announced the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” in his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026. On March 4, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI signed a voluntary agreement to secure their own electricity supplies and cover grid-upgrade costs. CoinDesk data showed Bitcoin at $65,443.13 at 1:02 p.m. on February 25, up 3.7% over 24 hours.
