AI Tools Speed Up Vulnerability Detection, Shortening Shelf Life of Crypto Security Audits
The growing use of AI-powered automation tools is creating new challenges for blockchain security. Smart contracts have traditionally undergone a single security audit before deployment, but hackers can now use AI tools to scan codebases and identify potential vulnerabilities faster and at lower cost. Blockchain security firms warn that the useful life of a one-off audit has shortened significantly, requiring crypto protocols to shift from point-in-time reviews to continuous security monitoring to defend against automated attacks.
According to a July 8, 2026, Cointelegraph report, security firm CertiK said hackers stole about $1.32 billion in the first half of 2026. A Shielded Labs engineer also recently used AI tools to uncover a critical vulnerability that had existed in Zcash's shielded pool for four years. Organizations including TRM Labs warn that hackers are using AI to target older codebases, making continuous reviews essential for crypto protocols.
