Taiwan Warns 29,000 E-Scooter Owners Over Lapsed Insurance

Taiwan brought micro electric two-wheel vehicles under its registration and compulsory automobile liability insurance regime on Nov. 30, 2022, requiring owners to obtain license plates and maintain coverage. The rules are significant because the vehicles are widely used for short urban trips, while uninsured crashes can leave victims with limited avenues for compensation and expose owners to penalties.

The Financial Supervisory Commission said about 29,000 micro electric two-wheel vehicles currently lack compulsory coverage. Owners can be fined as much as NT$1,500, while registrations may be revoked if insurance remains expired for more than six months. The regulator has instructed insurers to send repeated renewal notices and urged owners to use online enrollment services and the electronic insurance-certificate inquiry platform.
