Taiwan Warns 29,000 E-Bike Owners Over Mandatory Insurance

Taiwan brought micro electric two-wheelers under registration and compulsory automobile liability insurance rules on Nov. 30, 2022, seeking to ensure basic compensation for traffic-accident victims. The vehicles are widely used for short urban trips, but a lapse in coverage can leave injured parties without timely protection and expose owners to regulatory penalties.

The Financial Supervisory Commission said about 29,000 micro electric two-wheelers currently lack mandatory coverage. Owners face fines of as much as NT$1,500, while registrations may be revoked if a vehicle remains uninsured for more than six months after its policy expires. The regulator has instructed insurers to send repeated renewal notices and urged owners to use online enrollment services and the electronic insurance certificate inquiry platform.
