Google Adds 23 Agent Skills and Gemma 4 to Android Studio Quail 4

Android Studio is Google’s official integrated development environment for building Android applications. The Quail 4 release pushes AI-assisted coding beyond code completion by embedding reusable agent skills into the development workflow. The approach allows an AI agent to select established procedures for tasks including builds, performance diagnostics and cross-device development, lowering the setup burden for developers adopting agent-based software engineering.

Google released the stable version of Android Studio Quail 4 with 23 preinstalled agent skills that can be activated automatically from development instructions. The update also integrates the Gemma 4 on-device model, enabling cross-file refactoring and tool calls without an internet connection. Local execution can keep sensitive source code on the developer’s machine while reducing network dependence, offering potential gains in privacy, reliability and productivity.
