Banks Face AI Agent Identity Verification and Payment Risks
AI agent commerce is gradually moving beyond searches and price comparisons toward autonomous ordering and payment. Determining whether an identity represents a consumer, merchant or software agent has become a new challenge for bank risk controls. Unless standards for verification, authorization and liability are developed in parallel, the financial industry risks repeating the early e-commerce era, when regulation lagged behind and fraud losses rose.
Visa and Mastercard have recently accelerated efforts to build payment rails that support AI agent transactions, although reports have not disclosed firm launch dates, investment amounts or fraud-loss figures. Experts say banks should become involved early in setting standards for identity verification, payment authorization and risk management, rather than allowing technology companies and card networks to shape the rules unilaterally.
