Lawson to Pilot JPYC Stablecoin Payments in Japan’s First POS Integration

2 reports · First detected 2026-07-13 · Last active 2026-07-13

As fintech and blockchain applications expand rapidly, stablecoins are gradually moving beyond online transactions into everyday physical settings. Japanese convenience-store giant Lawson’s latest initiative marks the country’s first attempt to integrate a yen-denominated stablecoin directly into a physical retailer’s point-of-sale system. The project could substantially streamline checkout and signals stablecoins’ expansion from conventional financial remittance services into mainstream brick-and-mortar retail, making it a significant industry benchmark.

Lawson plans to launch a pilot for payments using the yen-denominated JPYC stablecoin in August 2026, with blockchain technology company HashPort providing the core technical support. The pilot will focus on testing transaction-system stability in physical stores and the smooth real-time updating of balances at checkout. If completed successfully, the trial would offer an important practical example of seamlessly linking decentralized financial tools with traditional retail checkout systems in Japan.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
JCB, Digital Garage and Lawson to Test USDC Payments in Tokyo2026-08-19 · 2 reports · similarity 0.85

JCB and Digital Garage have been working since January 2026 to connect stablecoin rails with Japan’s established merchant acquiring and settlement systems. Bringing Lawson into the effort moves the technology closer to high-frequency retail use. The trial targets international visitors, for whom dollar-backed USDC could reduce the friction of currency exchange and cross-border card payments while testing whether blockchain payments can fit into familiar checkout routines.

The companies said in August 2026 they would conduct a proof of concept at a Lawson store in Tokyo. Shoppers will pay with USDC on the Base blockchain by presenting a barcode on a smartphone for scanning at checkout. The test will assess payment speed, customer usability, blockchain processing and merchant settlement. JCB, Digital Garage and Lawson did not disclose the transaction value, number of participants or a timetable for a commercial rollout.

Lawson Tests Stablecoin Payments Through Existing POS System2026-08-08 · 3 reports · similarity 0.83

Japan established a regulatory framework for fiat-backed stablecoins under its revised Payment Services Act, effective in June 2023, paving the way for their use beyond crypto trading. Lawson’s trial is significant because it connects blockchain-based money to the same point-of-sale infrastructure used for everyday convenience-store purchases, potentially lowering adoption costs for retailers while testing whether digital tokens can match the speed and simplicity of cards and QR-code payments.

NETSTARS and Lawson plan to conduct the proof of concept at the Lawson Osaki Atrium store in Tokyo on Aug. 17, 2026, following a preliminary test completed on Aug. 3. Shoppers present a barcode from MetaMask for scanning by the existing POS register, without a dedicated terminal. The system supports JPYC, USDC and USDT across Solana and Polygon, making it Japan’s first convenience-store test of POS-integrated stablecoin payments.
