Jane Goodall Institute, AWS Use AI to Digitize 500,000 Pages of Chimpanzee Research Notes

The Jane Goodall Institute holds more than 500,000 pages of handwritten chimpanzee field notes and multimedia records spanning decades. The vast collection is difficult to search. Its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) aims to use AI to preserve these valuable historical records and help research institutions worldwide share and analyze findings from long-term observations more quickly.

The partners are building the Gombe AI Research Platform, which will use large language models and image-analysis technology to identify, organize and digitize handwritten notes and multimedia content, making the records easier to search. The platform is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2026. The partners have not disclosed the value of the collaboration or a more specific launch date.
