California Partners With Anthropic to Offer Claude at Half Price and Boost Government Efficiency

California is bringing generative AI into public-sector procurement, focusing not only on deploying the technology but also on using statewide demand to negotiate better terms. Claude is the first AI productivity tool made available to all state agencies, cities and counties through the California Department of Technology’s statewide shared procurement platform. Its uses include drafting documents, summarizing material and analyzing data, with an emphasis on assisting rather than replacing public employees.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the partnership with San Francisco-based AI company Anthropic on June 29, 2026. State agencies can purchase Claude seats at 50% of the list price, with the same offer available to city and county governments. The agreement also includes free staff training, technical support and workflow consulting. Agencies will fund their own purchases, and officials did not disclose the total value of the statewide contract or estimated savings.
