Spanish Startup Openchip Begins Validation of First AI Test Chip

Openchip is a Spanish AI chip startup focused on high-performance data-center computing. Its designs use the open RISC-V instruction set and a chiplet architecture, with an emphasis on performance per watt and energy efficiency. The initiative could help determine whether Europe can reduce its reliance on U.S. chip suppliers and build an independent technology stack spanning processor design and software.

Openchip recently said it had begun validating its first AI test chip, assessing the design’s functionality, performance and power consumption to inform the development of future commercial products. The company plans to launch and begin shipping advanced data-center chips made using process technology below 3 nanometers in 2028. It has not disclosed its research and development investment or initial production volume.
