Situational Awareness Seeks Capital After AI Selloff Hits Leveraged Miner Bets

2 reports · First detected 2026-07-30 · Last active 2026-07-31

Situational Awareness, founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, built its strategy around the expansion of artificial-intelligence infrastructure and amassed large positions in Bitcoin miners expected to benefit from data-center demand. The approach linked the AI investment boom with crypto-mining equities, while borrowing increased the fund’s exposure. That combination matters because a reversal in richly valued AI-related shares can force leveraged investors to sell related holdings and amplify market swings.

The fund was hit by a sharp selloff in AI-linked stocks in July 2026 and is seeking fresh capital from investors and lenders, according to the Financial Times. Situational Awareness held about $1.1 billion of Bitcoin-mining shares, with leverage worsening losses during the rout. As selling pressure associated with the fund eased, IREN jumped as much as 30% and Bitdeer Technologies gained 24.7%, underscoring how deleveraging flows had driven volatility across crypto-mining stocks.
