Taiwan Developer Uses AI to Complete Super A’Can Emulator
Super A’Can, a 16-bit console released in Taiwan in 1995, occupies a rare place in the island’s early video-game history. Its short commercial life and scarce hardware documentation left preservationists without a mature emulator for years. Reproducing the system is therefore more than a retro-computing exercise: it helps protect locally developed games and a largely inaccessible chapter of Taiwan’s digital heritage.
Taiwanese developer Billy Jr. has completed Bcan, a high-fidelity Super A’Can emulator, after using OpenAI technology to support reverse engineering and debugging. The project overcame hardware-emulation problems that had delayed progress for roughly two decades, according to the event account. Bcan now allows software made for the 1995 console to run on modern computers, highlighting how generative AI can accelerate specialized, low-level technical research.
