Reddit Weighs Face ID and Touch ID Checks to Combat AI Bots

Reddit is built around anonymous discussion and community self-governance, but a surge in bot accounts, SEO spam and vote manipulation fueled by generative AI is eroding trust in its discussions. The platform is therefore seeking a way to verify that users are human without requiring them to disclose their real names, although the privacy implications of biometric checks remain a key concern.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said on March 20, 2026, that the company was evaluating on-device human verification using Face ID, Touch ID or passkeys to block AI bots and spam accounts, with stricter measures also possible if necessary. At the time, Reddit had not formally announced a launch date, pricing or which accounts would be covered.
