Argentina Proposes Bill to Curb Crypto and Payment Platforms' Role in Illegal Gambling

Unauthorized online gambling platforms in Argentina can collect funds through bank transfers, digital wallets and cryptocurrencies, complicating oversight and efforts to prevent gambling addiction. The government is therefore seeking to bring financial infrastructure under tighter control by requiring banks, payment service providers and virtual asset service providers to block money flows to illegal operators, strengthening the existing gambling regulatory regime.

The Argentine government recently submitted a bill to Congress that would empower authorities to identify unlicensed online gambling sites and order banks, payment companies and crypto-asset service providers to block related transactions. Existing reports have not disclosed a specific filing date, the amounts involved or an implementation timetable. The measure remains subject to congressional review and supporting regulations.
