AI Boom Lifts Taiwan Banks’ Five-Month SME Lending to Second-Highest on Record

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-17 · Last active 2026-07-17

The global AI boom has fueled strong demand for expansion financing and working capital among Taiwan’s semiconductor companies and related supply-chain SMEs. The technology-driven shift has energized the real economy while boosting lending momentum at domestic banks. SME lending is regarded as a key gauge of Taiwan’s exports and broader economic activity, showing how technology demand is translating into growth for the financial system.

Financial Supervisory Commission data showed that domestic banks extended a cumulative NT$28.971 billion in new loans to SMEs during the first five months of 2026, the second-highest amount on record for the period. Private banks were the most aggressive lenders, primarily pursuing financing opportunities in the technology supply chain. State-owned banks continued to lead in total outstanding loans, providing a stable funding base.

AI Demand Drives Taiwan Banks’ February Lending to Record High2026-04-09 · 3 reports · similarity 0.83

The rapid expansion of AI applications is prompting Taiwanese manufacturers and technology companies to spend more on raw materials, equipment and daily operations, lifting corporate financing demand at domestic banks. Demand from private-sector companies has been particularly strong for working capital and foreign-currency financing, showing that capacity expansion across the AI supply chain has become a key driver of bank lending growth.

Lending by Taiwan’s domestic banks increased by NT$568.7 billion in February from the previous month, the biggest gain for the month on record. The rise was driven mainly by private-sector companies’ funding needs for material purchases and working capital, as well as large, short-term funding allocations by government agencies. The data also showed foreign-currency lending reaching a high, supported by the AI industry’s demand for imported equipment and raw materials.
