Wall Street Journal Backs Investor’s AI-Written Commentary
Generative AI is moving rapidly into opinion journalism, challenging long-standing assumptions about authorship, originality and disclosure. The debate carries added weight when a signed commentary comes from prominent investor Stanley Druckenmiller and appears in The Wall Street Journal, an institution whose opinion pages rely on the authority of named contributors. The case turns AI assistance from a routine productivity choice into a test of who is accountable for arguments published under an individual’s name.
Druckenmiller acknowledged that the Journal commentary was generated by AI and likened using the technology to using a calculator. The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page editor backed him and said outside contributors are not barred from using AI. The disclosure has stirred a media-ethics debate over whether AI involvement should be disclosed, how much human input is needed for a signed article, and whether publications should adopt explicit rules for externally submitted commentary.
