Coinbase-Backed Base Blockchain Recovers From Two-Hour Outage
Base is a Coinbase-backed Ethereum layer-2 network that uses a single sequencer to order transactions and reduce mainnet costs. If the sequencer fails, block production and transactions across the entire chain can grind to a halt. Following a 17-minute stoppage in September 2024 and an outage of about half an hour in August 2025, the latest incident again highlighted the operational risks posed by centralized components.
At 16:03 UTC on June 25, 2026, Base stopped producing blocks normally after block 47,806,542, interrupting transaction processing for about two hours. Sequencing resumed at around 17:51. Coinbase said user funds were safe. A post-mortem confirmed that the sequencer’s block-building logic had failed to clear stale state left by an unsuccessful transaction. The team has fixed the issue and continues to monitor the network.
