ByteDance Reportedly Developing AI Chips to Reduce Reliance on U.S. Suppliers
ByteDance is pursuing greater chip self-sufficiency to support its generative AI and content recommendation services and reduce its reliance on U.S. suppliers including Intel, AMD and Nvidia. As the United States continues to restrict shipments of advanced chips to China, developing proprietary computing and memory technology is critical to the company’s computing costs, supply stability and ability to expand its AI business.
The latest reports say ByteDance is developing an in-house CPU optimized for AI inference and working with Xin Yuan Semiconductor on memory technology. It has also brought in Qualcomm as companies compete for wafer capacity. The CPU design is expected to be finalized by early 2027 at the latest, with mass production scheduled for the second half of that year. Its SeedChip AI accelerator is planned to enter mass production in 2026.
