Unowned LEI Portfolios Leave Financial Groups Exposed
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character code used to identify legal entities in financial transactions and regulatory reporting. It must be renewed annually, with its status published in the Global LEI Index maintained by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation. When renewal is missed, the code remains searchable but is marked LAPSED, potentially disrupting transaction reporting, client onboarding and counterparty checks across groups with dozens or hundreds of incorporated entities.
Ubisecure RapidLEI said on Aug. 27, 2026 that lapses most often reflect missing ownership rather than cost or regulatory complexity, compounded by decentralized registrations, abandoned email accounts and corporate restructurings. A Deloitte survey published in March 2025 found 46% of 36 respondents across 28 countries ranked completing the EU’s DORA Register of Information as its toughest requirement, while only 8% considered themselves fully compliant with ICT third-party risk-management rules.
