OpenAI Acquires Cloud Platform Ona in Enterprise AI Agent Push
Ona, founded as Gitpod in 2020, initially offered cloud development environments before pivoting to an AI agent execution platform. It has served more than 2 million developers. Such infrastructure allows agents to operate beyond one-off conversations and local sessions in customer-controlled, auditable cloud environments. This is key to OpenAI's push to embed Codex in enterprise workflows and address requirements involving security, governance, token costs and return on investment.
OpenAI announced on June 11, 2026, that it would acquire Ona and integrate its secure cloud execution and orchestration technology into Codex. The deal value was not disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to regulatory approval. Codex has more than 5 million weekly users, up 400% since the start of 2026, while Ona's weekly agent sessions increased 13-fold over the same period. Ona's team will join OpenAI's Codex division after the deal closes.
