Taipower Plans Direct Power Lines for AI Data Centers

Rapid growth in artificial intelligence computing is raising demand for large, stable power supplies in Taiwan, home to a concentration of semiconductor and technology manufacturers. Taiwan Power Co., or Taipower, is seeking more flexible ways to serve energy-intensive data centers while limiting pressure on existing transmission and distribution networks and strengthening the grid against localized demand surges.

Taipower Chairman Tseng Wen-sheng said the state-owned utility is considering dedicated lines that would deliver electricity directly from power plants to AI data centers, with users responsible for managing the connections. Market forces would determine costs and economically viable distances. Taipower is also upgrading underground infrastructure and improving grid resilience, though it has not disclosed investment amounts, participating plants or customers, or a launch date.
