Taiwan Health Ministry Tightens Hospital AI and Cybersecurity Governance; Experts Recommend Budgets of at Least 3%

As healthcare institutions accelerate their adoption of AI and data applications, medical records, personal data and clinical systems face greater risks of breaches and cyberattacks. Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare has therefore made AI, data and cybersecurity governance key review areas in hospitals' digital transformation, requiring innovation and security safeguards to advance in tandem.

The ministry recently said its midterm reviews would focus on hospitals' AI and cybersecurity governance. Experts recommend that each hospital raise cybersecurity spending to at least 3% of its overall budget. Healthcare institutions must also strengthen incident-response procedures to comply with stricter breach-reporting and data-subject notification requirements introduced by amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act.
