RBC and TD Launch Swift Retail Transfer Service in Canada
Swift began developing the retail cross-border payments framework with banks in September 2025, extending infrastructure long associated with wholesale transfers to consumers and small businesses. The scheme targets upfront fee and foreign-exchange transparency, full-value delivery and end-to-end tracking. The effort matters because about 80% of an international payment’s average journey is spent in the domestic “last mile,” a bottleneck the industry must address as it works toward the G20’s 2027 cross-border payment goals.
Royal Bank of Canada and TD Bank Group have gone live with the framework to improve international retail transfers into Canada, with RBC acting as a Canadian gateway intermediary and TD supporting domestic clearing connectivity. Swift said on July 22, 2026 that 26 financial institutions had begun processing payments under the scheme across 25 corridors connecting 17 markets. More than 70 institutions have committed to implementation during 2026. The banks and Swift did not disclose investment costs or transaction limits.
