OpenAI Launches Safer ChatGPT Mode for Teens

Teenagers have used generative artificial intelligence for schoolwork, information searches and personal conversations, raising concerns about inaccurate answers, sensitive content and unhealthy reliance on chatbots. OpenAI’s dedicated experience for users aged 13 to 17 is intended to preserve ChatGPT’s educational benefits while encouraging safer use and critical thinking, as parents and policymakers intensify scrutiny of how AI products affect minors.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens with stricter safeguards for users under 18, combining existing protections with new parental controls. Teen accounts will be placed into the dedicated mode automatically, with tighter handling of sensitive conversations and stronger detection of potentially risky behavior. The rollout addresses criticism that teenagers had access to ChatGPT for years before receiving an experience designed specifically for their age group.
