Altman and Musk Say AI Singularity Is Here as Risks Mount

The AI “singularity” describes a point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human capabilities and begins accelerating technological progress beyond society’s control. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk have separately argued that humanity may already be living through that transition. Their claims carry weight as frontier models make rapid gains in reasoning and problem-solving, while governments and companies remain without widely accepted safeguards for systems that could become more capable than their creators.

Recent AI models have reportedly solved mathematical problems that resisted researchers for years and uncovered previously hidden vulnerabilities, developments cited as evidence that the technology has entered a new phase. Bloomberg cautioned that the decisive threshold would be recursive self-improvement, in which an AI system helps design increasingly powerful successors. If that cycle begins without effective constraints, humans could permanently lose the ability to direct the pace of development or use a meaningful “pause button” to contain emerging risks.
