Former Google AI Ethics Chief's Paper Proves Prescient, Highlighting Five AI Risks
Timnit Gebru, a former co-lead of Google's AI ethics team, co-authored "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots," which warned that large language models would amplify bias, generate hallucinations and increase environmental costs. The research highlighted how commercial competition could lead technology companies to prioritize rapid product launches over safety, transparency and ethical review.
The paper was formally published in 2021. A 2026 review of generative AI's development found that its five identified risks—hallucinations, bias, training-data problems, concentration of power and energy consumption—had since emerged. The warnings drew renewed attention about five years after Gebru left Google. The event involved no investment or transaction, so there was no financial amount to report.
