Bunq Seeks Sale of Irish SME Lender Capitalflow
Capitalflow, founded in Dublin in 2016, provides asset-backed and other financing to Irish small businesses and property investors. Bunq announced its acquisition in July 2021 and completed it on Nov. 30; the deal was reported at about €141 million and coincided with a $228 million Series A led by former owner Pollen Street Capital. The purchase gave Capitalflow access to deposit funding from the Dutch neobank, helping it expand as an alternative to Ireland’s traditional lenders.
FinTech Futures reported on Aug. 3, citing the Business Post, that Bunq is seeking to sell Capitalflow as it plans to exit direct commercial balance-sheet lending in Ireland and concentrate on retail banking. Capitalflow’s loan book has reached about €1.2 billion, boosted by its February 2024 purchase of a €122 million Lunar Commercial Mortgages portfolio and an April 2026 expansion into buy-to-let mortgages. Bunq said it remained committed to supporting Capitalflow but declined to comment on the third-party report.
