AI Boom Exposes GPUs’ Environmental and Ethical Costs
GPUs evolved from gaming and graphics accelerators into the computational backbone of generative AI, with hundreds of thousands deployed in data centers. Nvidia says it introduced the “world’s first GPU” in 1999, though graphics hardware dates to 1970s arcade machines. Their spread has sharpened scrutiny of whether AI’s benefits justify the mining, toxic chemicals, electricity, water consumption and electronic waste embedded across a chip’s life cycle.
The Verge reported on July 21, 2026, that data centers accounted for 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024. A Greenpeace-linked study found electricity used to manufacture AI chips surged 350% from 2023 to 2024, lifting carbon emissions fourfold to about 453,600 metric tons. Researchers at UCR and Caltech estimated AI-related air pollution could impose more than $20 billion in public-health costs by 2028 and contribute to 1,300 premature deaths annually by 2030.
