AI Boom Pushes Memory Industry Into Supercycle, Elevating Taiwan's Strategic Role
The memory industry has historically been highly exposed to fluctuations in supply, demand and prices, resulting in pronounced business cycles. The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research said rapidly expanding demand from AI infrastructure, data centers and edge computing is reshaping the industry's supply-demand structure. Although Taiwan is not the market-share leader in memory, it is deeply embedded in the AI semiconductor supply chain, increasing its strategic importance.
The institute's latest analysis said the memory industry is breaking free from its traditional cycle and entering an AI-driven supercycle. Related reports did not disclose the analysis's publication date, investment amounts or specific market-share figures. They said, however, that as advanced memory displaces existing capacity, Taiwanese companies could capture spillover orders, emerge as part of a critical group in the global supply chain and benefit from new growth opportunities.
