X Cuts Revenue Sharing for Content-Farm Accounts, Cracks Down on Misuse of ‘BREAKING’ Headlines
X’s creator revenue-sharing program pays eligible accounts based on factors including engagement and impressions, but it has also attracted large numbers of “content-farm accounts” that repost or rewrite trending stories. These accounts use sensational headlines to capture traffic, potentially crowding out original media outlets and creators. The platform’s rule changes therefore carry implications for both content quality and creator income.
As of July 20, 2026, X product chief Nikita Bier had confirmed that the platform cut revenue sharing for the first wave of content-farm accounts to 60% of previous levels, with further reductions planned. He did not disclose specific amounts. X will also permanently demonetize users who misuse “BREAKING” headlines. One influencer protesting the policy was found to have posted 91 breaking-news items in a single week.
