Claude Code Founder Wants to Rename ‘Vibe Coding’; Users Suggest ‘Slop’
Former OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy coined the term “vibe coding” in February 2025 to describe developers using natural-language prompts to have AI generate code, with less line-by-line review. The approach gained wider adoption after Anthropic launched Claude Code, while also raising concerns about code quality, security vulnerabilities and the impact on engineering jobs.
As of July 20, 2026, Claude Code founder Boris Cherny had publicly said he was tired of the term “vibe coding” and asked the community for alternatives. Users instead suggested “slop,” a term associated with low-quality content, underscoring developers’ continuing doubts about the reliability, maintenance costs and accountability of AI-generated code.

Developer Ahmed Nagdy recently launched the free website claude.nagdy.me, featuring 11 interactive modules that let users learn by doing through a built-in terminal simulator, with no need to install Claude Code or obtain an API key. The platform also offers a configuration-file generator. As of July 19, 2026, the course was available to use directly online.
