Bitcoin BIP Repository Removes Luke Dashjr as Editor

Bitcoin Improvement Proposals are the formal documents used to describe changes to Bitcoin’s protocol, software ecosystem and development processes. Editors screen submissions, assign proposal numbers and merge qualifying drafts into the bitcoin/bips repository, but publication does not signal community approval or adoption. Luke Dashjr took over the role in 2016 and was later joined by five other editors, making the neutrality of his administrative authority important to Bitcoin’s decentralized governance.

The bitcoin/bips repository merged pull request #2248 on Aug. 10, 2026, removing Dashjr from the BIP 3 editor roster and reducing the group to five members. Repository participants confirmed that his editor and administrator privileges had already been revoked. The removal motion alleged that Dashjr favored BIP 110 despite his involvement in it and noted that he supplied less than 1% of editor comments after April 2024. Dashjr protested the decision and accused the Core team of abusing its authority.
