Vitalik Says Diamond iO Brings Hidden Smart Contracts Closer
Indistinguishability obfuscation, or iO, is often described as a holy grail of cryptography because it aims to make software executable while concealing how it works and what secrets it contains. Applied to public blockchains such as Ethereum, the technology could shield smart-contract logic and private keys from observers, addressing a fundamental privacy weakness of transparent ledgers and potentially enabling applications that cannot safely operate onchain today.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently examined Diamond iO, a new cryptographic protocol that sharply reduces the computational complexity associated with code obfuscation to what he characterized as a “planetary-scale” level. The advance could move fully hidden smart contracts closer to commercial feasibility. The report, however, provided no launch date, benchmark results or deployment-cost estimates, leaving the protocol’s practical performance and readiness for production use unproven.
