Nicaragua Builds Fintech Growth on Payments and Remittances

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-24 · Last active 2026-07-24

Nicaragua’s fintech opportunity rests less on a large startup base than on digitising an economy still heavily dependent on cash and remittances. World Bank data put nominal gross domestic product at about $19.70 billion in 2024, while only 31% of adults had access to financial services. That gap makes affordable payments, mobile wallets and cross-border transfers important tools for financial inclusion, merchant formalisation and small-business growth.

Banco Central de Nicaragua said on Jan. 29, 2025, that remittance inflows reached $5.243 billion in 2024, up 12.5% from a year earlier. By the end of the first quarter of 2025, the country had 3.2 million payment cards and 436,410 electronic-money accounts. The central bank has also advanced IBAN implementation and oversight of payment-technology providers, laying regulatory and infrastructure foundations for fintech expansion through 2026.

The history behind this event
Honduras and Central America's Fintech Landscape in 20262026-07-11 · 1 reports · similarity 0.86

Central America has accelerated its fintech transformation in recent years, with developments in Honduras playing a particularly important role. The country has long depended on remittances as a pillar of its economy, but those funds have traditionally moved through costly and inefficient channels. Expanding fintech services such as digital payments and digital banking—and bringing large flows of money into the formal financial system—has therefore become central to the country's strategy for improving financial inclusion and driving economic transformation.

According to the latest 2026 report, Honduras' fintech ecosystem has grown to about 14–20 active companies. The Central Bank of Honduras and the National Banking and Insurance Commission are developing relevant regulatory policies. Digitizing remittances is critical to this transformation because remittance inflows amounted to as much as 26% of the country's gross domestic product in 2024. Expanding the adoption of digital wallets and accounts will be a priority over the next two years.
