Bitcoin Is Slowly Supplanting Legacy Monetary Policy Mechanisms
Bitcoin launched on January 3, 2009, with its protocol capping supply at 21 million coins, beyond the reach of central banks’ interest-rate decisions or balance-sheet expansion. As institutions including BlackRock add it to investment portfolios and reserve allocations, its scarcity, cross-border transferability and non-sovereign settlement capabilities are challenging gold, sovereign debt and fiat currencies as stores of value.
On January 10, 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs, giving institutions exposure through regulated products. On March 6, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, initially capitalized with an estimated 200,000 bitcoins seized by the government. Regulatory attention has also shifted toward custody, capital requirements and sovereign reserve management.
