Tether Winds Down aUSDT Stablecoin as It Pivots to Tech Holding Company

2 reports · First detected 2026-06-18 · Last active 2026-06-18

aUSDT is a gold-backed derivative stablecoin launched by Tether. It is backed by the company’s physical gold token XAUT, allowing holders to retain exposure to gold while gaining U.S. dollar-denominated liquidity. The shutdown signals that Tether is streamlining its stablecoin portfolio and concentrating resources on larger-scale core assets and new technology ventures.

Tether said it will cease operating aUSDT, with holders required to redeem their tokens by September 17. They may receive the underlying XAUT collateral in return. The company has not disclosed the total value of aUSDT involved. After retiring the product, Tether will continue developing its flagship gold token XAUT while accelerating investments in AI, robotics and other fields as it transitions into a technology holding company.
