Google Images Adds AI Generation in 25th-Anniversary Revamp

2 reports · First detected 2026-07-15 · Last active 2026-07-15

Launched in July 2001, Google Images has become a major gateway to visual information for users worldwide over the past 25 years. The rise of generative AI is moving image search beyond indexing photos on existing webpages toward real-time creation and personalized experiences. The revamp marks both a quarter-century milestone for the service and a key part of Google’s strategy to redefine search in the AI era.

To celebrate the service’s 25th anniversary, Google formally launched a redesigned search interface in July 2026. The update introduces a Pinterest-style personalized inspiration board and gallery features, while integrating the Nano Banana image model into AI Overviews for the first time. Starting immediately, users can generate images with AI directly in search results, significantly shortening the process of finding visual assets.
