Bose Pivots to Software as AI Wearables Reshape Audio
Founded by Amar Bose in 1964, privately held Bose built its reputation on speakers, noise-canceling headphones and automotive systems. Lila Snyder, who became chief executive in September 2020, began a broad restructuring as the pandemic, chip shortages and platform giants such as Apple challenged the business. The strategy is to preserve Bose’s edge in premium sound while expanding beyond its own hardware into software, technology licensing and audio components for cars, smart glasses and other wearables.
Bose acquired McIntosh Group, owner of McIntosh and Sonus faber, on November 19, 2024, pushing into luxury audio; financial terms were not disclosed. It followed on June 9, 2026, with the purchase of Vienna-based connected-audio software provider StreamUnlimited, also for an undisclosed sum. Snyder said the rise of AI wearables is increasing demand for beamforming, noise suppression and speech clarity in constrained designs, creating an opening to embed Bose know-how in third-party products through offerings such as Sound by Bose.
