Meta Launches Mac App for AI Assistant
Meta AI began as an assistant embedded across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger before Meta Platforms launched a standalone mobile app in April 2025. Bringing the service to macOS extends that strategy from social and mobile interactions into desktop productivity, where Meta is competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini for a more persistent role in users’ daily work.
Meta released the dedicated Mac app on Aug. 19, 2026. Users can share a selected window so Meta AI can interpret on-screen material, answer questions, offer suggestions or draft content. Holding the Fn key activates system-wide voice dictation in any app, placing transcribed text at the cursor. The initial release emphasizes screen context and text entry rather than full computer control, so it does not yet operate other Mac applications as an autonomous agent.
