OpenAI Commits More Than $200 Million to Singapore, Establishes First Overseas Applied AI Lab

OpenAI established its Asia-Pacific base in Singapore in 2024 and is now partnering with the country's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) in alignment with its National AI Strategy. Singapore is set to become a hub for deploying frontier AI across public services, finance, healthcare and digital infrastructure. The move also reflects how global AI competition has expanded beyond model development into industry deployment and talent cultivation.

OpenAI announced “OpenAI for Singapore” at the ATx Summit on May 19, 2026, committing more than S$300 million, or about US$234 million, to establish the OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab, its first applied AI laboratory outside the United States. The company will add more than 200 technical roles locally over the next several years and make Singapore one of its global hubs for Forward-Deployed Engineers.
