Runway Launches AI Model Router for Generative Media
Runway, founded in 2018, built its reputation on generative video models, but a proliferation of image, video and audio systems has left developers juggling benchmarks and integrations. That fragmentation is making orchestration — choosing the right model for each job — a strategic layer of the AI media stack. The New York startup raised $315 million in a Series E round led by General Atlantic on Feb. 10, 2026, giving it fresh capital to expand beyond individual models and into infrastructure.
On July 23, 2026, Runway launched Runway Media Router through Runway Dev, the developer platform it introduced earlier in July. The service offers one API for Runway’s own and third-party image, video and audio models, automatically routing requests according to a customer’s preferred balance of quality, speed and cost. Runway said it is the first router designed specifically for generative media. Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock and Quora are among customers using its API to embed media generation directly in their products.
