Google and Stripe Vie to Set AI Payment Standards and Capture Agentic Commerce
AI agents are evolving from information assistants into tools that can select products, authorize transactions and make payments on users' behalf, making transactional identity, risk controls and accountability critical issues. Google and Stripe are competing not over a single payment tool, but over control of the protocol gateway and infrastructure underpinning future automated commerce.
Google launched the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) with more than 60 companies on September 16, 2025. Stripe and OpenAI released the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) that same month. Stripe also acquired stablecoin platform Bridge for $1.1 billion and launched payments-focused blockchain Tempo in September 2025, bringing KYA, fiat and crypto payments into the AI agent ecosystem.

The history behind this eventStripe Partners With Google to Integrate Payments Into Gemini and AI Models
Stripe launched its Agentic Commerce Suite in 2025, enabling merchants to connect to multiple AI shopping interfaces through a single integration while handling checkout, payments and fraud prevention. As AI agents move from making recommendations to placing orders on customers’ behalf, payment credentials, authorization and cross-platform interoperability are becoming critical infrastructure for the next generation of e-commerce.
At its Sessions event on April 29, 2026, Stripe announced a partnership with Google that will allow merchants to sell directly through AI Mode and the Gemini app. Quince, Fanatics and JD Sports will be among the first to join, while the value of the deal was not disclosed. The same day, Stripe opened its Link wallet, which has more than 250 million users, to AI agents. Agent-initiated payments will use single-use card numbers and require the user’s approval.
