Tokyo Government Launches ‘AI Governor Yuriko’ to Deliver Updates in Multiple Languages

1 reports · First detected 2026-04-22 · Last active 2026-04-22

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government created “AI Governor Yuriko,” modeled on Governor Yuriko Koike, to give foreign residents and visitors faster access to government information. The project applies generative AI to public communication, reproducing the governor’s voice and supporting multiple languages. However, content accuracy, AI hallucinations and the use of public resources have also emerged as key governance and public-trust concerns.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government released the first videos on its website and official X account on April 21, 2026, and added a “Yuriko’s Voice” section to the governor’s webpage. An introductory video demonstrated English, French, Spanish and Arabic, while another addressed electricity conservation during extreme heat. Government staff produced the videos using commercially available AI tools, and public information available as of April 22 did not specify a separate budget.
