Billionaire Mark Cuban Sells Most of His Bitcoin, Disappointed by Its Performance as a Hedge
Bitcoin has long been viewed as “digital gold” because of its fixed supply and decentralized structure, offering a potential hedge against fiat currency depreciation and geopolitical risk. In 2021, Mark Cuban said his crypto portfolio was roughly 60% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum and 10% other tokens. His shift in stance has prompted the market to reassess Bitcoin’s role as a safe-haven asset.
Cuban said on the Front Office Sports show “Portfolio Players” on May 21, 2026, that he had sold most of his Bitcoin, without disclosing the value or exact timing of the transactions. He said gold had at one point risen to $5,000 an ounce during the war in Iran while Bitcoin fell. Bitcoin was trading at about $77,672 that day, 38.4% below its October 2025 peak. Cuban said he remained more bullish on Ethereum by comparison.
