Fortnite Opens AI-Powered NPC Conversations to Creators
Generative AI is shifting entertainment away from fixed scripts toward experiences tailored to individual users. Epic Games’ Conversations system for Fortnite lets creators define a character’s personality, knowledge and behavior through prompts. The resulting non-player characters can remember events within a game session, generate unscripted responses to player actions and trigger gameplay, replacing the branching dialogue trees traditionally written in advance.
Epic Games introduced Conversations as an Experimental feature in Unreal Editor for Fortnite on April 16, 2026, then said on July 16 that creators could publish islands using LLM-powered characters from July 30 with version 41.30. The initial rollout gives 36 Fortnite characters consistent voices and personas. Epic said the voice models use performances from professional actors who consented to that use. The company did not disclose development spending or creator pricing.
