Copper is essential to power grids, transformers, servers and data centers, making supply security increasingly important as artificial-intelligence investment accelerates. Chile produces roughly a quarter of the world's mined copper, but much of the industry's output depends on mature, high-altitude deposits where ore grades are declining and operations are exposed to volatile weather. S&P Global expects total copper demand to rise from 28.4 million metric tons in 2025 to 42.3 million by 2040, while baseline supply reaches only 32.2 million tons, leaving little room for prolonged disruptions.

Heavy rain, strong winds and Andean snow battered Chile from mid-July. By July 23, the storm had killed at least 13 people and left about 60,000 isolated; consulting firm Colliers estimated losses above $700 million. State-owned Codelco suspended surface work at Andina and ore shipments from El Teniente's open pit, while Antofagasta curtailed non-essential activity at Los Pelambres and Anglo American adjusted operations at Los Bronces. BHP said its northern mines were operating normally, but the stoppages highlighted how climate shocks can tighten a copper market already strained by AI-linked demand.
