Opinion: Mass Adoption Is Pulling Crypto Away From Its Cypherpunk Roots

1 reports · First detected 2026-03-24 · Last active 2026-03-24

Cryptocurrency emerged from the cypherpunk vision of using cryptography to resist government overreach and corporate surveillance, with privacy, permissionlessness and censorship resistance at its core. As DeFi is absorbed into regulatory frameworks and traditional finance, the technology risks becoming back-end infrastructure for institutional finance, potentially eroding individual autonomy and permissionless access.

In an article published on March 24, 2026, Logos Chief Evangelist Dr Corey Petty said centralized exchanges routinely account for more than 80% of daily crypto trading, while pro-crypto policies in the United States have encouraged institutions to pour billions of dollars into DeFi. Citing a Samsung report that found nine in 10 Europeans are concerned about online privacy, he argued that privacy should once again be the default architecture.
