Amazon to Build Green, Water-Cooled AI Data Center Campus in Missouri
Generative AI is driving demand for cloud computing capacity, putting data centers’ electricity and water consumption under greater sustainability scrutiny. Amazon is building a modern AI data center campus in Missouri using green water-cooling technology, aiming to limit the impact on the environment and local water resources as it expands its computing infrastructure.
Amazon said it will invest billions of dollars in the Missouri campus, which is expected to create more than 400 full-time jobs. It has also allocated $7 million to upgrade community infrastructure. The company pledged to continue improving cooling and water efficiency and aims to become “water positive” by 2030, returning more water to communities than its operations consume.

Demand for generative AI and cloud services is driving up computing and electricity requirements, prompting Amazon to expand its U.S. data-center footprint. The project will mark Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) first data-center campus in Louisiana. It builds on the more than $4.7 billion Amazon invested in the state from 2010 through 2024 and positions northwestern Louisiana as a new hub for AI infrastructure and the energy transition.
Amazon said on February 23, 2026, that it would spend $12 billion to develop interconnected campuses with STACK Infrastructure in Caddo and Bossier parishes. The projects are expected to create 540 full-time jobs and 1,710 related positions. Amazon will cover all costs for new power infrastructure, invest up to $400 million in public water-system improvements and add as much as 200 MW of solar capacity. Construction is due to begin within weeks, with the campuses scheduled to come online in phases over the next several years.
